UX/UI Design

Redefining League of Legends UI

Current

Redesigned

  • League of Legends (2010) is one of the fastest growing MMO MOBA-genre eSports title game. Despite the game being 11 years old, League of Legends still uses the same formula and interaction since the Adobe AIR platform, which was later discontinued in favor of their own code base and HTML5 in 2014.

  • The user interface interaction is still familiar and contains the essence of the previous iterations, but yet has not been changed a whole lot. In which, the benefit of doing so provides long-played players and new players are able to use and navigate through the client more accessibly and conveniently.

  • The main problems that Riot Games face from users are the performance and inconsistency. Because the client is code based with HTML5, the potentials of adding contents are limited. While it may be the case that it is easy to maintain, but the client completely breaks down when it encounters bug(s) or server errors.

  • Despite being the most played multiplayer game internationally, Riot Games has yet to develop a standalone client for League of Legends, just like their games and other competitors.

  • This design was made to get an idea of how I visualize on what the standalone client can be or imagined. The UI layout has been branched out further for users to access full overview of game’s updates and features. This is particular layout is one of many common design we would see from big game titles.

  • Some of the existing elements from the current client are still present, such as being able to access categories and events from the home screen. Because Riot Games are slowing branching their games into an unified ecosystem, some inspiration came from one of their eSports title, Valorant (Riot Games; 2020).

  • The goal of the design is to keep minimalistic and easy on user’s eyes, while keeping the information and features from the existing client. I had an idea to change the entire client completely refreshed with different take of color and style, but it would leave no choice for the game to lose its identity and essence that was kept for 12 years. I believe that current users would need times to get used to it.
